A new, full-day free summer camp for middle school-aged students will be launched in Bridgeport.

The camp — Urban Scolars Day Camp — is hosted through LifeBridge Community Services and will run from June 29 to Aug. 21. It will be offered free of charge to Bridgeport residents.

Mathis said the camp will offer a variety of things including academic support, robotics, dance, music and visual arts. All supplies and food services will be provided free of charge.

Those involved with the camp will recruit youth from Bryant, Cesar Batalla, Geraldine Claytor, Curiale, Classical Studies, Greak Oaks, New Beginnings and Park City Prep schools to attend the camp.

The facility is a short walking distance from LifeBridge’s newly renovated Center for Youth Development, at the corner of Fairfield and Colorado avenues.

Normal summer back to top

LifeBridge has partnered with Southwest Community Health Center, which will provide COVID-19 testing, health screenings and weekly infection control plans as an added security measure for those participating.

Mollie Melbourne, president and CEO of Southwest Community Health Center, said it’s important the city’s youth have as normal a summer as possible after the pandemic.

There will be daily temperature checks, social distancing and enhanced cleaning procedures to ensure everyone’s safety. Each camper will be issued individual hand sanitizer. No supplies or materials will be shared among campers.

Kim Johnson, chief youth development officer at LifeBridge, said her team expects to have 50 spots available on a first come, first serve basis.

“If you want your child to have a safe, fun and transformative experience do not delay in submitting your completed application, which takes less than 15 minutes,” Johnson said.
