CANDIDATE PROFILE

Simsbury’s next Planning Director should have a passion for public service and a commitment to providing a customer service oriented approach to serving the public. The Director of Planning is a member of the Town Staff Leadership Team. Key tasks will include: performing highly responsible administrative, professional and technical work involving a broad range of municipal planning and land use functions; implementing and administering the Plan of Conservation and Development; supporting elected and appointed Boards, Committees, and Commissions; coordinating and overseeing all town services that relate to the enforcement and administration of planning, zoning, conservation/inland-wetlands, design review, land use regulation and building code requirements; assisting with economic development initiatives; assisting with affordable housing and community development initiatives. The new Director will be guiding a department that has a blend of experienced professionals as well as some newer employees eager to learn. The Director is responsible for coaching, supervising and evaluating departmental personnel in accordance with collective bargaining provisions and other applicable human resources policies.

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The position’s salary range is $82,142-$131,427 per year.  Starting salary is dependent upon the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications. The Town offers a competitive benefits package including medical, dental and vision insurance, life insurance, long term disability insurance, a retirement plan (DB/DC option), 457 deferred compensation retirement plan, and paid leave including holidays, personal leave, sick leave, and vacation leave.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Urban/Regional Planning or a related field, a Master’s degree is preferred. Candidates must have a minimum of 6-7 years of related experience including at least 3-4 of supervisory experience. AICP Designation preferred.
