Records Retention & Management

10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

This workshop will address municipal records management requirements, including basic concepts and best practices for records retention, maintenance and disposition.

Records are defined by statute, in part, as “any recorded data or information relating to the conduct of the public's business” [CGS Section 1-200(5)].  Records management requirements apply to all records, regardless of records formats or levels of access (for example, paper or electronic formats; open or restricted access).

Effective records management can improve government efficiencies and services to citizens while reducing costs and liabilities.

The Office of the Public Records Administrator, Connecticut State Library, develops and directs the records management program for municipalities, other political subdivisions of the state, and the executive branch state agencies, pursuant to CGS Sections 11-8 and 11-8a.
