Westport Police Gear Up For Citizen Police Program

Westport residents interested in learning about the local police department are invited to register for the Citizens’ Police Academy.

The program begins on Sept. 29 and will run for nine weeks, a news release said. The first five weeks of classes will be from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Fridays. The final four weeks of the program will be from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Those who participate in the program, which can accommodate up to 24 community members over the age of 21, will learn about various aspects of law enforcement and how the department operates, the release said. Participants will also be allowed to have access to some hands-on experiences.

Ride along with officer back to top

Police officers from the Westport Police Department will be the instructors of the program. Participants will have the opportunity to experience a ride-along with an officer within the Westport police patrol division.

“Participants will gain a better understanding of the role of the police department in the community,” the release said.

All participants will leave the program with more knowledge about the police department and with CPR/AED certification, according to the release.

Registration for this program runs until Sept. 12. Applications can be picked up at the Westport police headquarters. Interested participants can also reach out to Lt. Jillian Cabana at 203-341-600 to receive an application or more information about the academy.
