New Haven steps ahead for walkers
Prevention Magazine and the American Podiatric Medical Association have given New Haven top state honors in their latest scorings of best walking cities.
New Haven ranked 19th among the top 100 cities nationally, between Worcester, Ma. and Wilmington, Del., and first among Connecticut’s 10 largest cities.
New Haven scored especially high in “walkability” criteria for having a great deal of parkland relative to its size, and for having many residents who commute to work on foot.
Other criteria by which the cities are judged include the percentage of people who walk for fitness, the crime rate and the number of cars per household (presumable the fewer the better).
The best walking city honors are given to recognize that walking is a primary path to fitness and general good health.
The ranking categories include the top 100 cities nationally, and also the 10 largest cities within each state.
Leading the pack nationally was Cambridge, Ma., followed by New York City. In Connecticut, West Hartford ranked second after New Haven and placed 46th nationally.
