And the 2007 Democracy Cup goes to?
West Hartford, North Haven and East Haven have won the Democracy Cup given for best voter turnout in the 2007 elections.
Statewide the turnout was 37 percent, but in top ranking East Haven, where two recounts were needed to decide a close mayoral race, the turnout was 64.1 percent.
East Haven won in the small town category for communities with fewer than 15,000 active voters.
North Haven achieved a 57.9 percent turnout to lead in the mid-sized category for communities with between 15,000 and 35,000 voters.
In the large category, West Hartford won with a 38.2 percent turnout, making it town’s fifth victory in eight years.
The Democracy Cup is awarded by the Secretary of the State’s office in conjunction with the East Haddam Civic Association, which created the contest in 2000 to boost voter participation.
Each winning municipality gets to keep its cup until the next year’s election.
