Bridgeport Bookmobile travels cross country
Bridgeport went all the way to Seattle to get what looks a great deal on a low mileage Bookmobile.
City librarian Scott Hughes came across an ad for the Bookmobile, with 7,100 miles on it, and asked then Mayor John Fabrizi to give it a look in November when he went to Seattle for the U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Summit.
Fabrizi opened negotiations and Bridgeport eventually got the 5-year-old, 32-foot-long Bookmobile for $100,000, about half Seattle’s asking price and one-quarter the price new. Still, it cost nothing because the city got a donation from the local Aiello Foundation to cover the purchase price.
Hughes, who took over as city librarian last year, said Bridgeport last had a Bookmobile in 1992. The new one should be of special benefit to senior citizens who can’t get to the library. It is equipped to be accessible for physically disabled.
It also is environmentally friendly, running on natural gas.
Hughes said he intends to get a commercial license that will allow him to personally drive the Bookmobile.
