ATV riders, paintball warriors face fines
Shelton has more than doubled fines for some violations of its open space regulations, with an eye toward limiting damage from all-terrain vehicles and paintball combat.
The ATVs chew up trails and create a nuisance with their noise. Paintball warriors tend to build barricades out of junk and leave behind thousands of expended plastic pellets, said Teresa Gallagher, city conservation agent.
The revised ordinance adds paintball, or any form of creation that employs a weapon, paintball to the list of activities, including ATV riding, already banned from city controlled land. It also boosts the fine from $100 to $250.
Gallagher said ATV riders are particularly attracted to the city’s Birch Bank Mountain area, but other area towns have reported ATV problems.
In recent months, Seymour has discussed imposing new limits and Naugatuck has pursued a public awareness solution.
Many municipalities have been boosting fines on a variety of ordinances because of a change in state law that raised the fine maximum to $250.
