High school senior sets election record
When Grady Keefe won a seat on Branford's Representative Town Meeting he earned a special place in the state’s electoral record book.
The 18-year-old Branford High senior was the youngest official elected last year in Connecticut and maybe the youngest ever elected in the state, according to the Secretary of the State’s office.
Since the voting age is 18, it will be a record hard to beat. As Keefe himself said in an Associated Press report, "the first time I ever got to vote, I got to vote for myself."
Already his class president, Keefe finished second among the eight RTM candidates in his district, with more than 900 votes.
He campaigned door-to-door, driving his grandmother’s aging Cadillac and assisted by his 15-year-old campaign manager, Greg Nobile. Together they registered 100 new voters at the high school.
They’re success anticipated the emphasis on youth and change later seen in the early national party primaries for President. They handed out buttons that said, "Teens 4 Grady rock this town." Giving away cider at a supermarket, their slogan was "Cider for Change."
In Branford the RTM is responsible for approving the town budget, which is currently about $90 million.
