Policy Enhancement 2008-09
Road Treatment Application
NaCl, CaCl2 & MgCl2
Road salt is a life saver in winter months. Municipal sanding and
salting operations keep roads open for emergency responders,
law enforcement, schools, and the general public. While careful
application helps protect the environment, road salt can leach
into local groundwater, creating a liability exposure to municipalities.
Beginning July 1, 2008, CIRMA will protect its Liability-Auto-
Property members against claims for damage to private water
supplies caused by routine winter road treatment applications.
This policy coverage enhancement is provided at no extra charge
to CIRMA LAP members.
Welcome coverage.
CIRMA’s Road Salt Application policy enhancement covers damage
from sodium chloride, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride,
or other chemical substances that are typically applied to
public streets and highways to melt ice and snow. The coverage
limits under the policy are an ample $25,000 for the remediation
costs of drilling a new well or the installation of water treatment
equipment. The general liability deductible, if any, applies.
Protecting your budget.
CIRMA’s new coverage helps protect municipal budgets and the community’s goodwill
from claims that arise from road salting during routine winter road maintenance. This
new coverage is another example of CIRMA’s member focus: coverage is specifically
tailored to the risk management needs of Connecticut’s municipalities and local public
agencies. For more information about road treatment application coverage or CIRMA’s
other new coverages for 2008-09, call or email Steve Bixler, VP for Underwriting, at
