Policy Enhancement 2008-09
Police Dog Coverage
Theirs is a dangerous job, too.
Police dogs are on the front line of law enforcement: pursuing
and apprehending violent offenders, controlling crowds, and
performing search and seizure operations. They are loyal, hardworking
members of the law enforcement team. Now their loyalty
is returned. Beginning July 1, 2008 CIRMA will protect its
Liability-Auto-Property members’ K-9 units from financial loss if a
police dog is injured or killed while engaged in law enforcement
duties. There is no additional charge for this coverage.
Keeping the unit
running.
CIRMA’s Police Dog Coverage ensures the ongoing operation of
the unit and public safety by providing replacement coverage of
up to $10,000, including training costs when a dog is killed or
must be retired because of injuries sustained while engaged in
law enforcement duties. Police Dog coverage also includes benefits
for emergency veterinary care of up to $2,500 per covered
injury, helping to protect your budget and assuring that an
wounded K-9 gets the veterinary care he needs.

coverage.
The biggest obstacle facing K-9 units today is funding. Many K-9 units rely on public fund
raising to help pay for the costs of operating the unit. Any police department that has
hesitated to start a unit because of the financial risk is now assured that their investment
will be protected and that the unit can continue to operate even when a dog is injured.
