POSITION: DIRECTOR OF ACCOUNTING
This is a skilled administrative and technical position assisting the Director of Finance in budgeting and financial projects, supervising and coordinating centralized accounting and clerical functions and planning a coordination of the City’s financial applications. Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, public administration or management, business administration or other appropriate field. CPA or CPFO designation or MBA in accounting or finance preferred. Six years of accounting experience, 3 in managerial or supervisory experience required, governmental accounting is preferred.
Starting salary $73,216.00

JOB DESCRIPTION
Nature of Work
This is a skilled administrative and technical position assisting the Director of Finance in budgeting and financial projects, supervising and coordinating centralized accounting and clerical functions and planning a coordination of the City’s financial applications. Under the supervision of the Director of Finance the Director of Accounting shall assist in the administration of matters relating to accounting, financial reporting, fund custody and disbursement, debt administration, investments, revenue planning and other related matters as assigned..
Example of Work
- Will keep, or cause to be kept, complete books of accounts showing all financial transactions of the City of Meriden and cause to be prepared such reports as may be required by the Director of Finance, City Manager or City Council.
- Assist with developing and recommending the budget; authorizes expenditures in accordance with budget.
- Assesses, develops and reviews appropriate internal controls within department.
- Develops organizational structure efficiencies and identifies staffing requirements.
- Plan and oversee the work of subordinate staff.
- Monitors performance of direct reports.
- Oversees annual audit. Serves as a liaison with the independent auditors.
- Prepares the City of Meriden’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), bond issue statements, and associated audits and documents.
- Responsible for compliance with all federal, state, local, payroll and other applicable reporting requirements.
- Originates and pursues the professional development of staff members, as approved by department head.
Performs related work as required.
