LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Municipal employers are responsible for protecting employees from injury and illness—and this includes protecting them from the aggravation of a pre-existing medical conditions.

If a job opening is physical in nature or labor-intensive, CIRMA recommends that its members implement a Pre- Employment Physical with a Human Performance Evaluation (HPE) component in its hiring process. These post-offer, preemployment requirements help ensure that a new hire can perform the physical-essential functions of the job. An added benefit is that the HPE component is a good opportunity to instruct new hires about how to safely perform the physical-essential functions of their job.

This CIRMA workshop will show you how to implement a Pre-Employment Physical requirement with an HPE component that protects the municipality from high loss costs associated with on-the-job injuries.

Topics covered include:

  • The components of a pre-employment physical, including the importance of a Human Performance Evaluation (HPE).
  • The cost and operational benefits of a post-offer, pre-employment physical requirement.
  • Why and how to use the Cost-of-Risk calculation to support the adoption of a pre-employment HPE.
  • The legal aspects of implementing a post-offer, pre-employment physical requirement, including American with Disability Act considerations and requirements.
  • Rescinding an offer after a failed Pre-Employment Physical.
  • CIRMA's 6-step approach to implementing an effective Pre-employment Medical & Fitness program.
