LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Sprains and strains are the most frequently occurring injuries in
municipal workplaces. Between 1998 and 2006, CIRMA received
nearly 25,000 such claims resulting in over $120,000,000 in
direct incurred claim costs, averaging almost $5,000 per claim.
This CIRMA workshop explains and reinforces proper lifting and
moving techniques. The instructors illustrate the application of
these techniques with a number of real-life scenarios developed
from actual municipal work environments.
Topics include the following:
- Principles of back safety
- Anatomy of the human back
- Common causes of back injury
- Safe lifting, pulling, and pushing techniques
- How to identify your limitations, pacing your efforts
- Preventive measures—exercises and stretches to tone and
strengthen your back
