"Planning and flexibility help reduce risk, costs, and schedule delays."

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

School buildings, police and fire stations, roads, and bridges are complex, big-ticket construction projects that come with some big risks to the municipal owner. Even a small renovation or building project may experience cost overruns, or delays, or contribute to a serious workplace injury.

In this new CIRMA workshop, attorney Timothy S. Fisher and Kenneth E. Fargnoli, PE, present risk management strategies that municipal leaders can use to control costs, stay on schedule, and reduce the risk of litigation in construction projects. These best practices will help public officials:

  • Build more cooperative teamwork and stronger communication to resolve disagreements smoothly;
  • Select qualified design professionals and consultants;
  • Manage the bidding process and select the appropriate project delivery system; and
  • Select the appropriate contract forms and insurance
  • coverage to manage liability

The instructors will show you how to reduce the risk—and the loss costs—associated with:

  • Personal injury, property loss, and economic loss during the construction project;
  • Environmental issues, assessments, and compliance;
  • Breach-of-contract and negligence by contractors; and
  • Contract claims for disputes associated with change orders, differing site conditions, and delays.
AUDIENCE This workshop is designed for:
  • Members of board of selectmen
  • Municipal risk managers
  • Building committee members
  • Finance directors
  • Town managers, business managers
