“The risk management workshops and seminars help us reduce claims.”

Martin Heft, First Selectman, Chester

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Millions of dollars a year are awarded to claimants for automobile injuries. These awards can be financially devastating to the public employers who pay them. One way or another, with or without insurance, the negligent party will shoulder the cost of large awards. One way to reduce these kinds of claims is to implement and adhere to a Fleet Safety Program.

This workshop was developed for municipalities that maintain a fleet of vehicles. It explains how a Fleet Safety Program will help your municipality manage the risks associated with vehicle-related events, reduce exposure to significant liabilities, and save your municipality significant amounts of money.

Topics Covered:

  • Elements of Fleet Safety Programs
  • How to develop a Fleet Safety Policy
  • How to implement a Fleet Maintenance Program
  • Driver training and education programs
  • Driver Performance Guidelines
  • The importance of documentation
  • Owned and non-owned vehicles

After completing this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify the financial risks and legal principles that affect organizations with fleets.
  • Outline the critical and general components of a fleet safety program and describe the benefits.
  • Understand the procedures for hiring and training drivers; and the performance guidelines for vehicles and drivers.
  • Understand the process of accident and injury review and the related responsibilities of managers and drivers.
  • Give examples of safety reward and response programs that promote good driving habits.
  • Describe a documentation system.
AUDIENCE This workshop is designed for:
  • Fleet Managers
  • Public Works Directors
  • Parks & Rec Directors
  • Fire Chiefs
  • Police Chiefs

  • School Business Managers
