SUMMARY

This workshop teaches managers and supervisors how to spot the warning signs of aggressive behavior in their organization. It discusses several types of workplace violence. It outlines the importance of internal policies and reporting procedures. The workshop provides managers the tools they need to diffuse aggressive behaviors by developing an effective workplace violence prevention program.
Management Series

Preventing Workplace Violence was developed to help supervisors make their workplace a more respectful and productive environment. This workshop is part of CIRMA’s Management Series. These workshops provide managers and supervisors the understanding and skills they need to develop a more effective risk management program.

For more information about this and other CIRMA workshops, please email CIRMA at cirmaworkshop@ccm-ct.org.

"Training in nonviolent response and conflict resolutionis thought to reduce the risk that volatile situationswill escalate to physical violence."

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Incidents of workplace violence have become so common that now only the most shocking make national news. Yet most supervisors still deny the possibility that such an incident could happen in their workplace. Or, worse yet, that it could be caused by one of their own employees. We want to believe, “It can’t happen here.” But behind the sensational headlines, a very real day-to-day trend of workplace threats, aggression, and assaults has grown to epidemic proportions.

The U.S. Department of Labor reports that homicides are the third-leading cause of fatal occupational injury in the U.S. While most incidents of workplace violence do not involve fatalities, even relatively minor episodes can devastate employees’ sense of personal security.

This workshop is designed to make managers more aware of the issues related to workplace violence and to provide some tools to help manage, defuse, and prevent it.

Participants will learn:

  • Common causes of violent and aggressive behavior, both internal and external.
  • The destructive results of even mild forms of aggression.
  • Warning signs of those who might pose a risk to a safe, secure workplace.
  • The basic steps in setting up a workplace violence prevention
  • program to reduce incidents and liability.
AUDIENCE This workshop is designed for:
  • Human Resource Directors
  • Risk Managers
  • Department Managers and Supervisors
