LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Electrical shock is a leading cause of occupational injury; the National Safety Council estimates that over 300 deaths each year—most preventable—occur because of electrical shocks encountered. Most fatalities involve powerlines.
Municipal employees who work daily with electrical equipment face ongoing exposure to live circuits, current leaks, or arcing. At high risk, too, are parks and public works employees who prune trees or service street or traffic lights near overhead powerlines. While electrocution is the most common cause of death from shock, consequent burns or falls also cause many injuries.
ConnOSHA requires municipal employees who work near exposed electrical equipment or power lines to be trained in electrical safety. This CIRMA workshop explores the nature of electricity, its hazards and prudent behaviors to safely perform jobs.
Topics presented in this workshop include:
- Dangers of Electricity
- Electrical Principles & Terminology
- Electrical Shock & The Body
- Electrical Burns & Other Injuries
