LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Hazards exist in almost every workplace. Ideally, they should be
eliminated at their source. When this is not feasible or
engineering and administrative controls are not effective,
CONN-OSHA requires the use of personal protective equipment
(PPE) to safeguard employees. PPE is equipment, such as
respirators, gloves, and head, eye, and foot protection, worn by
workers to minimize exposure to occupational hazards and to
prevent injury.
Employers are required to determine if PPE should be used to
protect their workers on the job. Wearing PPE does not reduce
the hazard itself, nor does it guarantee permanent or total
protection for workers. If PPE is to be used, a PPE program
should be implemented to ensure protective equipment is worn
properly and its limitations understood.
This free CIRMA workshop shows participants how to develop
and implement an effective PPE program. The first step in the
development of a PPE program is to identify all hazards at the
worksite. A hazard assessment is a formal process used to
review work methods and identify hazards that may result in
accidents.
During a typical assessment, inventories of physical or
chemical agents are checked, and work processes and activities
examined. Performance of a hazard assessment also assists in
determining the causes of accidents. A thorough, onsite hazard
assessment is essential: some hazards may be obvious, others
not. Hazards must be recognized before they can be eliminated
or guarded against, and the appropriate PPE selected.
This workshop discusses how to organize and perform a
thorough hazard assessment, actively involving employees, the
health and safety committees, and municipal or school
leadership.
