LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Swirling snow, icy roads, and poor visibility make snow
removal one of the most difficult and dangerous jobs performed by
public works departments. When everyday traffic and long
hours behind the wheel are added to the icy mix, snowplow
operators are severely tested.
Snow removal is one of the most important safety activities
performed by local governments. Everyone in the community—
especially emergency rescue workers—count on public works
departments to clear roads quickly after winter storms.
This CIRMA workshop provides a thorough introduction to
safe snowplow operation to new snowplow operators. It is also a
good refresher course for experienced members of municipal
agencies.
The workshop also discusses the many new technologies
that have been recently developed to improve the safety and
effectiveness of snowplow operations.
Workshop topics include:
- Preparing for a storm
- Snowplow operations
- Defensive driving
- Spreading operations
- New anti-icing techniques
- Cleanup
- Record keeping
- Hands-on equipment review
