July 24, 2008
Colchester Town Hall, Colchester, CT
10:00 AM - 12:00 Noon, Registration begins at 9:30 AM
SUMMARY
This CIRMA workshop explains the dynamic and complex hiring
issues that Human Relations personnel and hiring managers should
know to avoid liability claims.
| Management Series
As employees have become more aware of their rights,
they have become more willing to pursue employmentrelated
claims in court. In this litigious environment,
managers must be knowledgeable about their legal
requirements and changes in the law.

"This CIRMA workshop helps municipal leaders learn
how to steer clear of legal trouble, minimize the risk of

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- "Do you own a home in town?"
- "Do you smoke cigarettes or take drugs?"
- "Do you have a college degree?"
- "How old are you?"
Are questions such as these permissible to ask an applicant during
a job interview? This CIRMA workshop, led by Attorney Michael
Rose, will alert attendees to the wide variety of legal pitfalls in the
hiring process—from questions prohibited by Title VII, the
Age Discrimination in Employment Act, and the American with
Disabilities Act, to best practices in recruitment, testing, and
decision-making in the hiring process. The workshop will also discuss
the dangers inherent in using subjective hiring criteria and in failing
to properly train all interviewers.
- A job applicant asks that her application be kept
confidential—can you verify her current employment
without incurring liability?
- The applicant with the highest score on an employment test
has far less real job experience than other applicants - Can
you reject his application outright?
- You have to fill a job position for a financial sensitive
position. Can you use credit scores as a criteria? Can you
perform an online background search?
The two-hour workshop provides decision-makers a series of
"guideposts" to use during the hiring process. It will sensitize attendees
to the very real legal liabilities assumed when improper interviewing
and hiring practices are used.
The workshop presents four real-world scenarios in to further
illustrate the many nuances of these legal issues. Extensive handouts
will be provided to the participants.
