LEARNING OBJECTIVES

This workshop condenses two OSHA workshop into one. The first half of the workshop introduces participants to the requirements of 29 CFR1910.1030, Bloodborne Pathogens. Emphasis will be placed on developing the knowledge and skills necessary to develop and administrate the program and training as required by the rule.

There are over 100 types of bloodborne pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria, and parasites, that can be present in the blood or other body fluids of infected humans. In some municipal job functions bloodborne pathogen exposure is a real threat.

Topics presented in the first part of the workshop include:

  • Code requirements for the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard
  • Awareness of Bloodborne Pathogens in the workplace
  • Assessment of Bloodborne Pathogens including proper precautions and protection relative to potential exposures
  • Actions to be taken upon exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens

Hazards exist in almost every workplace. Ideally, they should be eliminated at their source. When this is not feasible or engineering and administrative controls not effective, CONN-OSHA requires the use of PPE to safeguard employees. PPE is equipment, such as respirators, gloves, and head, eye, and foot protection, worn by workers to minimize exposure to occupational hazards and prevent injury. Employees often need to wear PPE to protect themselves from workplace hazards that could cause injury, illness, and death.

Employers are required to determine if PPE should be used to protect their workers on the job. Wearing PPE does not reduce the hazard itself, nor does it guarantee permanent or total protection for workers. If PPE is to be used, a PPE program should be implemented to ensure protective equipment is worn properly and its limitations understood.
