LEARNING OBJECTIVES
This workshop combines two related topics into one. The first
session is about the Hazard Communication Standard, 29 CFR
1910.1200. This standard provides workers who are exposed to
hazardous chemicals with the right-to-know about the identity of
the chemicals in their workshap and their hazards. The OSHA
standard also requires employers to provide training on
appropriate protective measures.
Topics include:
- Explanation of the OSHA HAZCOM Standard,
29 CFR 1910.1200
- Explanation of toxic substances in the workplace and
identifying what appears on a product label
- Discussion of the information presented in the 8 sections of
the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
- Explanation of the purpose of a MSDS
- Definition of the words and terms found on a MSDS
- Explanation of where MSDSs are kept
- Identify rights and responsibilities of employees
- Discuss methods of controlling physical and health hazards
The second half of this workshop explores the types of
personal protective equipment (PPE) available with an emphasis
on assessing the hazards that exist in the workplace. When it is
not feasible to eliminate hazards or engineering and
administrative controls not effective, CONN-OSHA requires the
use of PPE to safeguard employees. PPE is equipment, such as
respirators, gloves, and head, eye, and foot protection, worn by
workers to minimize exposure to occupational hazards and
prevent injury. Employees often need to wear PPE to protect
themselves from workplace hazards that could cause injury,
illness, and death.
Employers are required to determine if PPE should be used
to protect their workers on the job. Wearing PPE does not reduce
the hazard itself, nor does it guarantee permanent or total
protection for workers. If PPE is to be used, a PPE program
should be implemented to ensure protective equipment is worn
properly and its limitations understood.
