LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The CIRMA Bloodborne Pathogens session covers the prudent
behaviors and practices required to deal with bloodborne
pathogens in the working environment. There are over 100 types
of bloodborne pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria, and
parasites, that can be present in the blood or other body fluids
of infected humans. Although the two most publicized are the
human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV, and the hepatitus B or
HBV virus, others are also dangerous, such as malaria, syphilis,
Lyme disease, and the Epstein-Barr virus.
Topics in this session include:
- Code requirements for the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen
Standard,
- Awareness of Bloodborne Pathogens in the workplace,
- Assessment of Bloodborne Pathogens including proper
precautions and protection relative to potential exposures,
- Actions to be taken upon exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens.
The Asbestos Awareness session will help participants
understand where asbestos may be located in schools and public
buildings, and how to avoid accidental exposure. Asbestos
becomes a hazard when it is damaged, crumbles, or in a state of
disrepair; then its particles are released into the air and inhaled
or ingested. The risk is even greater if the building is
demolished, renovated, or remodeled. Because asbestos fibers
are microscopic in size and light, they can remain airborne—and
inhaled by students, staff, or maintenance workers—for a long
time. Exposure is linked to asbestosis, lung cancer, and an
aggressive cancer called mesothelioma, all very serious diseases.
Topics in this session include:
- Types and sources of asbestos,
- Asbestos-containing products,
- Risk and risk factors,
- Avoidance
