National Safety Council Defensive Driving Course

This seminar is open to CIRMA members only.
SUMMARY
Driving defensively means not only taking responsibility
for yourself and your actions but also keeping an eye on “the
other guy”. This course teaches drivers how to monitor driver
and road conditions and defensive driving techniques. Attendees
receive a workbook and will be asked to complete a written test
near the end of the class. Participants receive the National Safety
Council DDC-4 Certification and wallet card after successfully
completing this workshop. Participants need to bring their
driver's license or license number to the workshop.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Hone your driving skills in this National Safety Council
course. This course is valuable training for anyone who operates
a municipal or board of education vehicle. In it you will learn
the benefits and the techniques of defensive driving.
Emotions and risky driving attitudes contribute to accidents.
You will learn to spot the common types of driving errors that
contribute to collisions, and the driving skills and techniques
that help prevent collisions and violations. You'll be taught
how to make safe and legal turns, evaluate and overcome the
hazards of passing, and how to avoid a head-on collision. You
will also be taught techniques you can use to maintain control
in adverse driving situations.
Workshop topics include:
- How to think defensively when driving
- Recognizing road hazards
- Understanding driver habits and behaviors
- Collision avoidance techniques
- Common driving violations that result in accidents
- Personal responsibility when driving
- Your driving environment
- Drugs and alcohol driving issues
- Backing safety

Jeffrey Rogers
Risk Management Representative
CIRMA Risk Control Services
Mr. Rogers received a B.S. in Occupational
Safety and Health from Keene State College
in 2000 and is currently working towards a
designation in Associate in Risk Management
(ARM). He has been working in the field of Risk Management for
over 6 years. He provides technical assistance, training, hazard
identification, and accident investigation services for CIRMA’s
Workers’ Compensation and LAP pool members. Mr. Rogers
currently sits on the University of Connecticut Advisory Board
for Environmental Safety and Occupational Health.

DIRECTIONS
From I-84 WEST
Exit 15 (Southbury). Take a right off exit ramp to Route 6 North.
Take Route 67 (left turn at a traffic light) through Roxbury and
Bridgewater to New Milford. At the intersection of Route 67 and
Route 202, bear left onto Route 202 West. At the bottom of the
Town Green prior to the traffic light, you will turn right onto Main
Street. The Town Hall (brick building) is located on the right hand
side, at the corner of Main and Church Streets. Park on the street
or behind Town Hall off Church Street.
From I-84 EAST:
Left Exit 7 for Brookfield/New Milford. Follow exit to end of highway
and take right (Route 7 North/ Route 202 East). Follow Route 7 into
New Milford 6-7 miles until Route 7 and 202 separate at Veteran’s
Bridge after Southworth’s Car Dealership. Bear right, staying on
Route 202 over Veteran’s Bridge. Pass through two lights and turn
left at third light onto New Milford Green (Main Street). The Town
Hall (brick building) is located on the right hand side, at the corner
of Main and Church Streets. Park on the street or behind Town Hall
off Church Street.
From I-95 NORTH or SOUTH:
Exit 15, Route 7 North in Norwalk. Exit 7 for Brookfield/New Milford
(left exit off I-84 East). Follow directions from I-84 East.
