SUMMARY

This workshop teaches participants how to develop a Lockout/ Tagout program: requirements for the procedures, what types of equipment are covered and exempt, and authorized vs. affected employees.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

When it's time for maintenance or repairs of equipment, simply turning the machine off or unplugging it while it is being serviced does not give enough protection for workers. Many accidents have happened because someone thought the machine was turned off or all of the energy had dissipated. These accidents are often serious; the U.S. Department of Labor states that, on average, workers injured on the job from hazardous energy lose over three weeks of work for recuperation.

Workers may be exposed to hazardous energy in several forms and combinations during installation, maintenance, service, or repair work:

  • Potential energy maybe stored in pressure vessels, gas tanks or hydraulics and unwittingly released as kinetic energy that can injure those nearby.
  • Electrical energy from generated electrical power, static sources, or electrical storage devices (such as batteries or capacitors) can shock or kill unwary workers.
  • Thermal energy resulting from mechanical work, radiation, chemical reaction, or electrical resistance can cause serious burns or injuries.

This CIRMA workshop will take you through the various required sections of an effective written Lockout/Tagout program from beginning to end. As each section is discussed, the requirements, definitions, and procedures will be explained. Ensuring your compliance with CONN-OSHA standards and everyone’s safety depends on a well-designed and fully implemented Lockout/ Tagout program.

Be sure your employees understand the basics of lockout/tagout and practice the recommended safety procedures on the job. If you are new to Lockout/Tagout, this class will give you the basics you need to know to get your program running. And, for those who are familiar with Lockout/Tagout, the class will serve as a valuable review.

SPEAKERS Cathrine Zinsser
Occupational Safety Training Specialist, CONN-OSHA Mrs. Zinsser has been with Connecticut OSHA for three years. She has a Bachelors of Science in Industrial Hygiene from Quinnipiac University. Mrs. Zinsser has been in the safety and environmental consulting field for several years and as a CONNOSHA Training Specialist, Mrs. Zinsser has responsibility for CONN-OSHA training activities.

DIRECTIONS

From the Connecticut Turnpike (I-95):
Get off at Exit 13 and head Southon Boston Post Road (US-1) for .4 mile. Turn RIGHT onto W Norwalk Road and continue for 4.6 miles (road name will change to White Oak Shade and Main Street). In the village of New Canaan, turn LEFT into the driveway next to New Canaan Town Hall.

From the Merritt Parkway (CT-15):
Get off at Exit 38 and head NORTH on CT-123 for 1.7 miles. Turn left onto East Ave (CT-106) for .5 mile. At the second light, turn right onto Main Street. Town Hall is just up the street on the left. Turn left into the driveway.

Park in municipal lot behind the Outback Teen Center, the yellow building with a steep green roof located just behind the New Canaan Town Hall and the New Canaan Playhouse.
