LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Over the past few years there has been a steep increase in the
number of injuries and fatal accidents that result from motor vehicle
crashes in work zones.
As our road system ages and traffic increases, road maintenance,
repair, and expansion has become a high priority for municipalities.
To accommodate the increased amount of road worked being
performed, more work is being performed at night and during peak
traffic times. Factor in distracted drivers and increased cell-phone
use, the result is a hazardous mix for workers, drivers, and
pedestrians alike.
During the four-hour workshop:
- Participants will view the video One Step from Death that
re-enacts five fatal work zone incidents. Each accident is
then discussed in detail, and the presenter discusses ways
to prevent similar accidents from occurring.
- The instructor will explain Personal Protective Equipment
and the recent ASNI Standard 107-2004 are explained. The
presenter also explains ways to make workers more visible to
adjacent traffic.
- The instructor will explain the Manual on Uniform Traffic
Control Devices (MUTCD)’s guidelines for signing patterns.
- Students will practice setting up a variety of work zones
using miniatures. Scenarios include:
- Two lane applications
- Four lane undivided highways
- Multi-lane divided highways
- On ramps and exits, and
- Intersections

- Public Works Directors, Supervisors, and Employees
