LEARNING OBJECTIVES
It may be counterintuitive, but on-the-job safety practices are just
as important in an office environment as they are on the shop floor.
Creating a good ergonomically correct office workspace will help
protect your own health and the health of your employees.OSHA reports that repetitive stress injuries (RSI) now account
for sixty-two percent of all Workers’ Compensation injuries, making
them the most common and most costly on-the-job injuries today. As computers are integrated into many different functional
areas, many more employees risk developing repetitive stress
injuries, such as carpal tunnel syndrome or low back pain from
hours working at an improperly positioned keyboard and monitor. The good news is that repetitive stress disorders are almost
entirely preventable with good workspace design and use.
Ergonomics is the science of work; its goal is to create a workspace
that accommodates the natural structure and movement of the body
to prevent musculoskeletal disorders— especially those arising
from repetitive stresses or awkward movements. CIRMA’s office ergonomics program draws on the most
up-to-date research to provide a systematic approach to reduce
the risk of injury from improper workspace design. Because pain
and discomfort are the chief symptoms of repetitive stress injuries,
good workspace design brings an added bonus of improved
employee efficiency and higher morale.
