LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Curiosity belongs in a science classroom. Safety does too. With
proper safety practices, the right equipment, and good classroom
management, students of all ages can safely investigate natural
phenomenon in the classroom laboratory.Although school violence grabs headlines, 90% of all injuries on
school grounds are accidental. The potential for accidents and
serious injury is especially acute in a science laboratory, where
young hands often work with hazardous materials and unfamiliar
equipment. Overcrowding and large class sizes, a problem in
many classrooms, are of special concern in the science laboratory.
Current OSHA Laboratory Standard reflects increased public
concern for personal safety environmental protection. “Downthe-
drain” disposal of liquid chemicals, once standard lab practice,
is now strictly prohibited in most cases.
This CIRMA workshop teaches the basic safety practices for
school laboratories. It introduces and discusses the major tenets of
the CONN-OSHA Laboratory Standard, which protect teachers,
students, school employees, as well as the environment and public
from accidental injury and exposures.
Participants will gain a working knowledge of prudent
safety practices in a school laboratory, including:
- Code requirements for Conn OSHA’s Chemical Hygiene Plan
- Regulations for laboratory design/occupancy loads
- Protection for teachers in a litigious environment
- Resolutions for laboratory safety issues
Participants will learn how to create and maintain a safer
working environment in the school science laboratory in
compliance with the CONN-OSHA Standard.
