"Exercise is a good preventive measure against
back pain, as well as the key to recovery,
Exercises promotes flexibility and strengthen
the spinal musculature."
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Ouch! Back pain is the third most expensive health disorder
affecting Americans; only heart disease and cancer are more
expensive to treat and more debilitating.
Unfortunately for employers, on-the-job injuries are a big
contributor to the country's back pain woes. According to the
Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 10% of all occupational injuries
reported are related to the back and spine. Fortunately, many of
these injuries are preventable with proper practices practices
and care of the back. As the workforce ages and becomes more
prone to these types of injuries, employers should take extra
steps to make sure the workplace itself isn’t a contributory factor
to back injuries.
CIRMA developed this workshop to help members better
understand how the human back is vulnerable to sudden and/or
repetitive injuries. Attendees will learn to identify areas of their
workplace that can be improved ergonomically. Also presented
are exercises and stretches that help employees keep their backs
healthy and strong to prevent common back injuries.
Topics include the following:
Anatomy of the human back
Specific pain generators
Common causes of back injury
Risk factors of low back injury
How to minimize injury with proper ergonomics
How to prevent injury by strengthening muscles through
exercise and increasing flexibility with proper stretches.
