LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Hazing is sometimes excused as a harmless way to integrate
new members of a group and increase solidarity. Hazing can
turn violent, even deadly, when the group's dynamics spin out of
control and blind aggression takes over.Past hazing is not a good indicator that future activites will
remain harmless. Otherwise innocuous initiation rites have
warped into physical, psychological, or sexual assaults when the
once-victimized participants feel the need for "pay-back." Connecticut state law prohibits hazing. The presence of
hazing activities within an organization exposes it to liability
claims, whether or not the leadership had any knowledge of the
hazing incident. Consent of the victim can't be used as a defense
in a civil suit. A decade of academic research reveals the problem is bigger
than many suspected and may be worsening. Hazing has been
documented in the workplace, fire departments, police
departments, school athletic teams, bands, theater groups, clubs,
and cheerleading squads; it is often surrounded by silence or
tacit acceptance. When hazardous hazing occurs, everyone in the
group, including the perpetrators, may be traumatized. This new CIRMA workshop investigates hazing, its impact
and consequences in schools and in municipal workplaces, and
ways leaders can stop it.
Topics include:
- Connecticut statutes on hazing; its definition and legal
consequences.
- Social and group dynamics surrounding hazing.
- Consequences to participants, group, and the organization.
- How to tell if an activity is actually hazing.
- Ways to prevent hazing.
AUDIENCE
This workshop is designed for:
- Board of Education/School District members
- School administrative staff, teaching staff
- Municipal managers and supervisors
- Police and Fire Department supervisors
