Workshop:

Accident Investigation Course for School Personnel
A CIRMA Workshop
January 15, 2008
Waterford Town Hall Auditorium

9:30 AM - 11:30 AM, Registration 9 AM

SUMMARY

This workshop instructs school personnel on proper incident reporting and investigative techniques. The focus is on employee injuries and incidents involving students and the general public who are on school grounds. Incident reporting and investigation helps ensure proper medical care is received and helps staff develop prevention strategies.
Management Series

Accident Investigation Course for School Personnel was developed to help school staff better investigate how accidents occur, thereby enabling them to prevent ones from happening in the future.

CIRMA’s Public School Series provides school staff the understanding they need to develop a more effective risk management program.

For more information, please email CIRMA at cirmaworkshop@ccm-ct.org.

The National School Safety Center recommends establishing a systematic, district-wide mandatory incident reporting system as a primary strategy.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Accidents may happen, but everyone should learn from them when they do. Proper accident investigation is critical in identifying, controlling, preventing, and mitigating accidents on school grounds. Investigations need to be performed by trained employees who can maintain an open mind about the causes of an accident throughout the investigation and who understand the important differences in the way an investigation should be conducted when a schoolchild or member of the public is involved.

The focus of the investigation should be on the accident, not the injury. Unfortunately, too often, the investigation process is limited to the necessary insurance paperwork. This CIRMA workshop shows attendees how to conduct a thorough and systematic investigation. The primary learning objectives of this workshop are to help attendees —

  • Understand the value of and need for an accident investigation.
  • Understand the critical differences between accident investigations involving employees and those involving school children or the general public who are on school grounds.
  • Understand the critical role of school staff in the accident investigation and reporting process.
  • Learn how to determine the root cause(s) of accidents and develop accident prevention techniques.
  • Understand the CIRMA claims management function and how investigations are critical to this function.
