Since the economic recovery has been quite slow since the end of the last recession, it is more important than ever to have a solid understanding of the region in which you live and work. Realizing potential risks and rewards to proposed developments and opportunities is critical to the success of any region, especially as economic development activities become more focused on transforming the place, rather than just making a deal.

This exercise provides tips and techniques for evaluating regions and economic possibilities, to help participants learn: (1) What is the current state of the region? --Describing and understanding the meaning of economic indicators (2) What parts of the local economy have been growing or declining? --Calculating economic trends and relative concentrations (3) How does the local economy compare to other economies? --Comparing regions through benchmarking, connecting regions to other economies (4) How are new opportunities identified? --Performing shift-share analyses and understanding industry multipliers
