Emergency Management Summit May 1;
Danvers leader to detail devastating factory disaster

Emergency management is again priority #1 in CT on May 1. That day the Connecticut Emergency Management Symposium 07: United Regions=Prepared Communities, will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hartford-Cromwell Hotel and Conference Center in Cromwell.

The event, to be attended by more than 700 state, local and business officials, is co-sponsored by the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities (CCM) and the State Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (DEMHS). The event will run from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In addition, other attendees at the 2007 symposium will include hospital emergency personnel, school safety officials, and college and university security staff.

Keynote address and General Session

Wayne Marquis, Town Manager of Danvers, Massachusetts will present a compelling keynote address. Without warning last November, the Danvers community in Massachusetts had an unnerving wake-up call. A major explosion leveled a chemical factory. Neighborhood houses and adjoining businesses were destroyed. Hear the real-life response story — including command and control procedures among local, regional, and state officials — to save and protect residents and businesses

Marquis will be followed by a Special DEMHS Address — State of the State for Emergency Management DEMHS officials will discuss the state of emergency management in Connecticut. The presentation will cover issues such as the status of statewide mutual aid agreements, fiscal year 2007 funding, and chief-elected officials’ emergency powers. The speakers will be Speakers: James “Skip” Thomas, Commissioner, DEMHS and Wayne E. Sandford, Deputy Commissioner, DEMHS

Following the DEMHS address, another general session will follow -- Evacuation Requires Communication: Overview of Regional Plans. This session allows attendees to ask critical questions and learn about their region’s plan for mass evacuations. State and local roles and resources during an evacuation will also be identified.

Workshops

Following the General Session, symposium attendees will assemble according to their DEMHS region to hear presentations on the topics that follow. These sessions will be moderated by the DEMHS regional coordinators.

  • Be in The Know: The Homeland Security Information Security Network (HSIN)
  • Organized Chaos: Managing Disaster Debris
  • The Reality of Disaster: Coping With Trauma
  • No Child or Adult Left Behind: Universal Access Plans

Special Outdoor Exhibits

There will also be special outdoor exhibits that showcase Universally Accessible Shelters, the State of CT Dept. of Public Health’s Mobile Field Hospital, and the State’s Urban Search and Rescue Team. Trade Show 50 leading public agencies and private-sector vendors in emergency management and homeland security will be on hand to assist and discuss your planning and response needs. Exhibits include • Communications • Data Protection • Engineering and Environmental Services • GIS • Information Technology • Mutual Aid • and Protective Equipment
